When it comes to First Aid training, Southern Vales First Aid want to make sure you have all the information you need to understand the differences between course codes to ensure you enroll in the right course.
We offer three courses and while HLTAID009 – Provide CPR is straight forward in what is delivered, but the two common course codes that often cause confusion are HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid and HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting.
Below, we outline these courses to help you choose the most appropriate one for your needs.
HLTAID010 – Provide CPR
This course allows you to gain the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
This course is great for everyone who may be required to provide CPR in various situations, including community, sport, and workplace settings.
Course delivery
This course is offered as a face-to-face course. Pre-course learning is required.
Course duration
For the standard course – Face to Face minimum duration is 2 hours.
For the express course – Face to Face minimum duration is 30 minutes*.
*Maximum class size applies. Learners undertaking the express course must have previously completed the HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation training. Learners will be required to provide a copy of their expiring Statement of Attainment on the day of their face-to-face course.
HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid (Includes CPR)
HLTAID011 is a comprehensive First Aid course that covers a broad range of scenarios and situations. It’s suitable for individuals across various industries and professions, providing a solid foundation in First Aid skills. The course includes the following:
- CPR for All Ages: Learn CPR techniques for adults, children, and infants.
- Basic Emergency Life Support: Handle various emergency scenarios confidently.
- Versatile Emergency Management: Be ready for anaphylaxis, asthma, epilepsy, and more.
- AED Proficiency: Master defibrillator usage with ease.
- Comprehensive Injury Care: Manage head, chest, bleeding, burns, fractures, and dislocations.
- Swift Incident Response: Address bites, poisons, choking, eye, and soft tissue injuries.
- Effective Wound Care: Perfect bandaging techniques for optimal wound management.

For the express course – Face to Face minimum duration is 60 minutes*
*Maximum class size applies. Learners undertaking the express course must have previously completed the HLTAID011 – Provide first aid. Learners will be required to provide a copy of their expiring Statement of Attainment on the day of their face-to-face course.
HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting (Includes CPR)
HLTAID012 is a specialised First Aid course designed for individuals working in education and care settings. This course covers essential First Aid skills while also addressing the unique needs and responsibilities of those working with children and in educational environments. Whether you’re a teacher, childcare worker, or involved in any educational setting, this course equips you with the knowledge and skills to respond effectively to emergencies involving children.
The HLTAID012 course aligns with the requirements set by regulatory bodies for individuals working in education and addresses scenarios that are more likely to occur in environments where children are present.
Course delivery
This course is offered as a face-to-face course. Pre-course learning is required.
Course duration
For the standard course – Face to Face minimum duration is 6.5 hours.
For the express course – Face to Face minimum duration is 60 minutes*.
*Maximum class size applies. Learners undertaking the express course must have previously completed the HLTAID012 – Provide first aid in an education and care setting. Learners will be required to provide a copy of their expiring Statement of Attainment on the day of their face-to-face course.
Choosing the Right Course
Selecting the appropriate course depends on your specific professional context and personal goals. If you want a broader foundation in First Aid applicable to various scenarios, HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid could be the best option for you. If you work in education or care and require specialised knowledge, HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting might be the ideal fit or often the required course.
It’s important to note that both HLTAID011 and HLTAID012 certifications have an expiration date. These certificates are valid for three years, but regulatory requirements and workplace policies may influence the frequency of renewal.
